Types Of Pellet Stoves

So you just bought a wood pellet stove or you’re thinking of buying one. Either way, you should be aware of the proper ways to care for your stove year round. With each season comes a chore. Depending on the type of stove you own (freestanding or insert) you will need to take some time and either perform these chores yourself or call in a professional.
If you’ve purchased an inserted wood pellet stove, each year right before winter or at the end of fall you should perform a chimney sweep. Call in the professionals for this task. Your chimney sweep should include a certification which shows that other components of the stove and chimney are safe and working efficiently.

fireplace stove inserts

There are two basic kinds of wood pellet stoves; freestanding and inserts. Freestanding stoves are very efficient for heating single rooms and are much easier to clean and maintain compared to inserts, which are inserted directly into an existing fireplace. Freestanding stoves require a 4″ pipe that attaches to your wall and allows the gases produced to escape to the outside.

There are two different types of wood pellet stoves, freestanding and inserts. They can generally cost anywhere from $1500-$3000.00 and you may choose from a number of colors. They can also differ by being a bottom fed or top fed stove. Either way, these stoves depend on small wooden pellets that are usually made of recycled materials that burn in an eco-friendly manner.

When purchasing a pellet stove you must look for quality if you’re looking for a stove that will last. Stoves made from real thin metal obviously won’t last long. But be aware that some of these stoves have electrical components that control the rate the pellets are released into the stove by gauging the temperature or on a timed cycle.

You can purchase a stove that has a wall thermostat or a glow plug igniter; both allow your stove to run automatically. These stoves do have a major disadvantage though; they require a large amount of electricity usage per month, which can reflect on your power bill. Also, the US Dept. of Housing and Urban Development recently banned installation of these stoves in mobile homes, leaving homeowners to choose different options.

Don’t buy a pellet stove insert just because you have a spot in your wall to fit it. Examine your wants and needs; maybe a freestanding stove would 1000 benefit you and your family more. Most inserts are extremely similar to freestanding models. Instead of ventilation pipes, you use a chimney. The hopper capacities are a bit smaller too.

Pellet stove inserts are more economical than gas or electric stoves and give that fireplace look to any room. They also add room to your room by not using up the space required by freestanding models. Fuels are not limited to wood pellets unless you buy a specific wood pellet stove. Corn and multi-fuel pellet inserts are now on the market and available for homes.
